Governance - The Institute Council

The Institute's affairs are governed by a council of 5 comprising 3 permanent members and 2 elected from the Institute membership.

The permanent members are: Company Secretary, Commercial Director and Metal Forming specialist of the Confederation of British Metalforming. The role of chairman will be held by either of the elected members. A quorum for decision making requires a minimum of 2 permanent and one elected member.


Council will meet as often as thought necessary with a minimum of two meetings per year.
Council will appoint and dissolve sub-committees and advisory boards as necessary. The chairman of such sub-committees and advisary boards will be a member of council.


The members of the Council ensure that the day to day operation an vision of the IIM are undertaken in a professional manner and that compliance to all legal and financial requirements is maintained.

Council Member Biographies


Dr Alan Arthur B Eng, C Eng, MIEE, MIIM


Alan is a professional engineer with a background in manufacturing technologies. He is currently the Commercial Director of the CBM the UK trade body representing employers in the Metalforming industry. He is a member of the institute council and holds the title of Director General. Alan has the specific responsibility for IIM membership recruitment and member servces.


Geraldine Bolton MCMI, Dip.OCR, MIIM


Geraldine is an experienced administrator with management expertise and is the Company Secretary of the CBM the UK trade body representing employers in the Metalforming industry. Geraldine is a member of the institute council and holds the title of Company Secretary of the Institute with specific responsibility for the legal and financial compliance of the IIM.

Dr Ken Campbell

Ken has spent his career in the Forging Industry and operates as a technical consultant and has expertise in administering the UK climate change agreement. Ken is a member of the institute council and has the specific responsibility for the vetting of new IIM membership aplications.

Dr Mike Dickinson

Mike has over 20 years experience in the forging industry specialising in data aquisition and control systems engineering. He has chaired the institute for the last 3 years organising much of the events program. He is particularly interested in technology transfer and into encouraging younger members into the metal forming industry. Mike presently runs Forgex - a company specialising in forge technology. Mike has the specific responsibility for convening the IIM events program.

Steve Lovell

Steve is currently Engineering Manager at Mettis Aerospace and has over 30 years experience in the forging industry at a senior management level. Steve has a background in materials technology and has extensive experience in forging aerospace materials, manufacturing systems and supply chain development. Steve is a member of the institute council and has the specific responsibility for the management and content of the web site.
